Battersea is proud to support women and girls in chess, and we are home to some of the strongest female players in the country. In 2019 the English Chess Federation found that female participation nationally stands at 7.5%, with the target of doubling that by 2023.
Chess is an inclusive sport for everyone to play. Battersea team captains are happy to help, and the club provides a welcoming environment to all regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation.
Battersea’s women’s team play in occasional events such as our International Women’s Day fixture against Hammersmith Women. We have more events planned later in 2023 at Battersea specifically to promote women and girls in chess, so watch this space and see you at the club.
Why a women’s team for chess?
Chess has two gender categories — women’s and open. Most players in the women’s category also play in the open category.
Women’s chess events are a great networking tool and continue to promote the game to women and girls, without undermining the gender balance of open events.
With the exception of Battersea Women, all of our league teams include players of all genders. We encourage you to get involved!
