The new English Chess Federation grades are out today – and Battersea players have a lot to smile about.
Grades went up almost across the board after a very active six months that has seen the club compete in two leagues, hold one league at home, and run several ECF-rated tournaments.

Battersea’s average grade is now 153 – technically down 1 point from the July 2017 list but that is mainly caused by several new grades not accounted for in the last round.
Particularly impressive was the performance of our juniors. Denis Dupuis shot up from 98 to 121 and Viktor Stoyanov, who has become a key member of the squad, hit 190 having previously been on 177.
Meanwhile, Ben Franklin rocketed 19 points to 159 and Midhun Unnikrishnan entered the big league by reaching 197.
Joel Morales, a stalwart of the U125 team, is now on 126 – his highest ever – and after a strong few months Arnold Hunt is on 131.
First team captain Chris Beckett is back to 200, having dipped to 197 in the last grading period. After some excellent performances this winter Steve Barry is back over the 130 barrier at 131.
There were also healthy rises for Aldo Camilleri (184), Malcolm Dancy (147) and Rafael Del Valle Domenech (183). Howard Groves went back over 150 to 152.
There were also new grades for Stephen Welch (118), Richard Murphy (98) and a first grade for Gregg Hutchence (77).
