Last year Chris Beckett submitted his ’best worst game’ and challenged us to do the same – here is my offering from 2017.
Chris played the Haldane Hack, named after former Battersea member
Robin Haldane.
Robin and I played a lot of chess together in our junior days, including competing for the club junior championship along with Tony Ashby and Paul Stokes.
I adopted some of Robin’s opening repertoire, albeit without his panache and success!
My game comes from the first round of the Kidlington U145 last year.
After an inauspicious start I recovered to make a 5-way tie for first place.
I think this was only the second time I had won a prize, the previous being my first ever tournament, the London Junior U12s.
Then I shared 4th place for which I received a postal order* for 10/-*.
In the last round I found myself on top board losing to a guy named John Nunn – whatever happened to him?
