It’s time to celebrate at Battersea Chess Club after our teenage hotshot Luca Buanne clinched the British Junior Chess Championships Under 14 title with a convincing win in Torquay today.
The youngster went into the final round in joint first place needing a full point to secure at least a share of the prize.
But when his main rival Stanley Badacsonyi slipped up against Caleb Caleshu, Luca seized the opportunity.
The Battersea junior stayed calm and converted what was a winning endgame against Balahari Bharat Kumar. Luca finished on 6/7, half a point ahead of Caleb, who beat Stanley, with a three-way tie for third.
All Luca’s games can be seen here:
Luca isn’t the only Battersea player competing in Devon. Viktor Stoyanov is in the main Open event while Midhun Unnikrishnan and Gregg Hutchence are in the Major Open.
Luca is also due to play in the Weekend Open Atkins tournament starting tonight.
