Battersea prodigy Shreyas Royal will compete in the Pro-Biz Cup on Saturday paired with International Master Ali Mortazavi.
Shreyas, aged nine, is taking part in the glitzy event that kicks off the London Chess Classic, the UK’s top regular elite chess tournament.
“So happy to competing this year in Pro-Biz Cup with the world’s leading Grandmasters,” Shreyas said on Facebook.
“I’m the youngest competitor ever! Thank you so much for giving me this wonderful opportunity!”
Shreyas is described is his bio on the Classic website as “just nine years old but has big ambitions in chess”.
It adds: “He became a Candidate Master at the age of six, becoming the UK youngest player to achieve this title.
“He is currently the top English Under 12, and his November 2018 FIDE rating put him second in the world for his age category.
“In 2017, he achieved joint first place in the European Youth Under 8 Championship and joint 4th place in the World Cadets Under 8. In 2018, he was awarded the Junior Prize in the British Major Open.
“Shreyas is a pupil at The Pointer School.”
