He’s a former World Chess Championship Candidate, but he was given a torrid time last night at Battersea Chess Club.
GM Jon Speelman emerged from our 24-board simul with a very impressive 19 wins last night – yet still faced some tough opposition.

Brains as well as Braune!
Alex Braune certainly flexed his muscles to overcome Jon in a 41-move game that started with an English Opening.

Even better!
In another English Opening, newcomer Philipp Even forced a resignation after GM Speelman allowed two powerful central pawns to storm forward.
Here is his game:
Honours weren’t even, they were Even.
And the draws
England junior Denis Dupuis swapped off queens and ended with a draw against the former world number 4.
Battersea stalwart Emil Todorow also got a draw as well as Pavel Nefodyov.

Everyone at the club would like to say thank you to GM Jon Speelman for making the trip south of the river to Battersea and for a great night’s chess.
