Battersea Chess Club took on the mighty Ginger GM Simon Williams in our first online simul last week – and we didn’t do too badly.
In a fast and furious chess.com match featuring 18 of our members, the final score was a healthy 5.5-12.5 to Simon that included five wins to our lot.
The GM killers were: Philipp Even, Tim Valentine and the juniors Nour Ajili, Denis Dupuis and CM Shreyas Royal. Plus Steve Barry got a draw.
We had a Grob Opening from Edwin. “Cheeky,” said Simon. “Let’s h5 him!”
Simon said of Denis at the start: “This kid is going to be a great player, super talented. Gigafinal champion, he is going to be a Grandmaster one day. So I’d better crush him now!”
But it didn’t quite end that way.
