Derek Harvey and Tim Valentine have shared first prize at the British Bangla Chess Association Under 147 rapidplay with 5/6 (with two others Ahmedul Hawk and Mohsen Abedian), for a joint Battersea victory in a 36-strong tournament at Aldgate.
Maybe inspired by the free biryani on offer, Tim won his first five games and would have won the tournament outright, had he not lost to Mohsen in the last round, but doing so allowed Derek to catch him in the final round. Derek had also lost to Mohsen earlier, but Mohsen had in turn lost to Peruvian player Jorge Apaza.
Duncan Kerr, currently the club’s keenest rapidplay enthusiast, scored 3/6 in the Open.
