There’s no two ways about it – tomorrow night’s penultimate Battersea Variants event is going to be twice as good!

No Doubles is all about double-trouble and knowing when to give two hoots about a thing or two.

The event starts as normal from 6.15pm on April 19 – but to secure your place you need to get to the club by 6pm or square it with Aldo beforehand.

No Doubles is the ninth Battersea Variants event and the last before our big finale. More details on that later.

The tournament will be followed by Grand Prix games and one of our teams is also in action in the Croydon & District League.

The details of No Doubles are below:

Format

  • 20 Players or less.
  • 5 Rounds
  • Swiss Pairing
  • 5+2 blitz

Rules

Normal chess rules apply. No player can ever have Pawns doubled on the same file. One simple rule change completely turns the game on its head once you realize the first few captures in regular chess nearly always rely on a player having doubled Pawns even though it might not last longer than a move each.

So many squares offer complete immunity where you ordinarily wouldn’t dare venture. We’ll play 5+2 this time because there’s going to be a lot more thought required.
