We’re back – and this is the BIG one. Quite literally, because for this Battersea Variants event we’re sticking two boards together.

Tomorrow, from 6.15pm, we’ll be playing Eight Sixteen, the daddy (or mummy) of all chess tournaments. The rules are below – but if you want to play the normal rules apply, let Aldo know and/or get to the club early to be in the first 20 participants.

Congratulations also must go to the unstoppable variants king Blair Connell who won AGAIN last week in our Marked Pawn tourney. Son Tung Nguyen won the silver medal and Stephen Welch, another regular medallist, came third.

But enough about last week. Here is what you need to know to play Eight Sixteen:

Format

  • 20 Players or less.
  • 5 Rounds
  • Swiss Pairing
  • 3+2

Rules

Normal chess rules apply. Two boards are set up as normal and are joined so to make up an 8×16 chessboard. With twice the amount of pieces. Two Kings each. Checkmate either to win the game.
Pieces can travel from one board to the other. Both Kings can be castled, with the respective pieces ending up on the “usual” squares.
