Battersea and Hammersmith, two of London’s most progressive chess clubs, are set to field more than 60 players between them in next week’s El Chessico.

The friendly on Tuesday will be one of the biggest inter-club matches to take place for a generation – and it will take place just days before the biggest event in chess worldwide, the World Chess Championship, comes to London.

El Chessico is back!

So far Battersea Chess Club has a total of 31 players committed to taking part, with Hammersmith’s numbers believed to be even higher.

So, to even up the numbers, we are appealing for more to come forward to and make this a truly massive event.

The match will take place at Battersea’s venue in Falcon Road, SW11, will players expected to arrive at 7.15pm.

It will be a friendly, but games will be graded. If you want to start working towards a grade this is the perfect opportunity to get paired with someone at the right level.

More players wanted!

Both sides are hoping to field as many boards as possible. So, if you’re a Battersea player you’re invited to play. Our captain this time will be Gregg Hutchence.

And there will be a second leg at a date to be confirmed.

It follows two previous El Chessico’s between the clubs in 2016 in which the clubs fielded 12 and 14 boards.

Last time around the match at Battersea ended in a 7-5 loss while there return at Hammersmith ended 7-7 leaving our rivals as series victors. And they haven’t shut up about it since.
