The Counties & District Correspondence Chess Championship is about to get under way and Surrey have issued a call for players.

If you’ve not got involved in this form of chess before this is a good start. Richard Tillet, the Surrey correspondence chess organiser, has given more details in this call to action below:

Playing online correspondence chess for Surrey

Last season Surrey entered four teams of eight boards in the Counties & District Correspondence Chess Championship. I’m hoping we can enter four teams again this season, but I need five more players.

It could be an interesting season as there’s a good chance our B team will be promoted to Div 1 (a critical game is currently being adjudicated). If this happens we will have two teams in Div 1 for the first time, as well as one in each of Divs 2 and 3. You can view last season’s crosstables here for Div 1, here for Div 2, and here for Div 3 – to view the games click on the cells in the crosstables.

Games are played via webserver. You simply log on to a web page to make your move using the on-screen board which shows the game position. You won’t need to make a substantial time commitment as you play just two games for your team over the course of the season. Both games are played at the same time against the same opponent, one with the white pieces and the other with black. Games start around mid October. The time limit is 10 moves in 30 days and you have an additional 14 days allowance for holiday leave. Games count towards International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) ratings. An important point to note is that use of computer engines is permitted – most players in Divs 1 and 2 use engines.

If you would like to play next season please let me know as soon as possible, and by next Friday (21 September) at the latest. There is nothing to pay (the SCCA funds the cost of team entries). If you have any questions just email or call me.
