Battersea Chess Club is proud to announce the return of our historic Handicap Trophy. Try your luck with queen odds against the club’s top players, or take on a lower rated player with fewer pieces yourself!
The first round of the Trophy will take place on Tuesday March 19th at 7.00 pm. There will be two heats, from which four winners will emerge and go forward to the Final on April 2nd. A further two heats will take place on Tuesday March 26th, with a further four players progressing to the Final.
These figures are assuming the maximum number of entrants (32) and may have to be modified. Draws will be decided by blitz games 3+2). Anyone who is a member and has an ECF grade can enter. Games are played at odds according to a set scale (see below). Pairings are picked from a hat on the night (like the FA Cup!). The time control is 25 + 10.
This is a knock-out competition. Should you win your first game your opponent will have to retire from the competition. But of course you may have to retire yourself should you lose! The Handicap Trophy (a very handsome one) has been played at Battersea for close on a hundred years. It’s waiting for your name. 1 0 – 100 No odds toss for colours
2 100 – 199 Odds receiver has white pieces and two ,moves
3 200 – 299 Odds receiver has the white pieces, remove Black’s pawn f7
4 300 – 399 Odds receiver has white pieces and two moves: remove black pawn f7
5 400 – 499 Odds giver has white pieces: remove knight b1
6 500 – 599 Odds giver has white pieces: remove knight bi and pawn f2
7 600 – 699 Odds giver has white pieces: remove rook a1
8 700 – 799 Odds giver has white pieces: remove rook a1 and pawn f2
9 800 – 899 Odds giver has white pieces: remove rook a1 and knight b1
10 900 – 999 Odds giver has white pieces : remove queen d1
